Coba It is located west of the village and archaeological site of Tulum, in the village of the same name. As for other places in the Mayan culture, there is no epigraphic evidence to ascertain the name that would have led in this pre-Hispanic times, but several colonial and cultural references of the area show that during the thirties of the twentieth century Eric Thompson noted that the name of the site would have been Kinchil Coba, an allusion to the name of God Solar Maya and a geographical designation that essentially would relate to the Mayan words -Cob- (or -Kob-), cloudy or minced, and -Ha-, water, which would form the name -instead of cloudy water or minced-, probably referring to the lakes around which the city was built.
Others, however, offer different translations at the end, ' -Coba-', which may include -water of the Chachalacas- (read the -cob- as the name of that bird in the region), -tooth tuza- (also the Mayan -coh- tooth and -bah-, tuza) or -abundant water- (from -cob-, abundance and -has- water). We will retain the first, be more reasonable in terms of geography site.
